Your Porsche’s double-clutch PDK transmission is a marvel of modern automobile engineering. What makes it unique is the clever combination of two gearboxes in one, allowing alternation between two separate driveshafts. Despite its complexity and the sheer power of Porsche engines, you’re unlikely to ever have a serious transmission problem. But it pays to be safe and if you ever notice the following five indications or trouble, don’t delay in visiting your local dealership for immediate transmission service.

4 Signs You Might Need Your Car's Transmission Serviced

Leaking Transmission Fluid

If you ever spot a suspicious puddle of reddish liquid under your car when you pull away from parking, you might have leaking transmission fluid. This shouldn’t be ignored as a gearbox with leaking fluid can rapidly overheat and even seize up irreparably.

Porsche engines produce far more power than most cars and therefore the transmission needs to contend with greater heat and friction. The transmission fluid makes this possible by lubricating the myriad moving parts inside each gearbox, keeping temperatures down while also cleaning out dirt and metal shavings. If a fluid leak isn’t fixed quickly, all kinds of other gearbox trouble will rapidly ensue.

Burning Fluid Smell

Most transmission issues result from low or aging fluid. When transmission fluid is allowed to get too old without being flushed and refreshed, it starts to fill with contaminants and thicken into a sludge.

This thickening fluid can no longer lubricate properly nor properly prevent the heat and friction from building up inside the transmission. The fluid will often begin to burn, emitting a smell not dissimilar to burning rubber. If you catch a whiff of such a burning rubber smell, visit a technician before your insufficiently lubricated gearbox starts to develop more serious problems.

Delaying Gear Shifts

If you’re trying to shift, but the new gear seems to take a second or two longer than usual to lock into place, then you have hesitant gears and should have a technician take a look. Sometimes, your engine might start revving as the gears struggle to shift, which is a sure sign that something’s wrong inside your gear mechanism.

Grinding or Humming Sounds

Both manual and automatic transmissions often start making odd noises when a problem develops. Humming or whining might point to any number of issues, including a faulty clutch, fluid pump, fluid line, torque converter, or something else.

Grinding often means the gears themselves are worn down or sticking against each other. Any type of strange noise is a good cause for having a checkup before the problem worsens.
