Electrical power can sometimes seem fickle. Connectors can corrode, wires can break, and electrical systems can fail over time. Unfortunately, electrical problems can even affect your Porsche. The key to the prevention of these problems is regular servicing. These are a sample of the components that your Porsche dealer can repair.

A Damaged Alternator

Your alternator generates power for your car’s electrical systems. It also provides the power to recharge your battery. The alternator generates power by converting mechanical energy from the crankshaft into electrical energy to power your car’s systems. The lifespan of an alternator is approximately eight years before it needs to be replaced.

As an alternator gets older, it starts to generate less power. This may not be noticeable for a while, as the alternator has surplus power generating capacity. Eventually, however, the alternator won’t be able to supply all of your car’s power. You’ll notice problems with dim cabin lights and random electrical issues as your car’s computer tries to allocate power. Our technicians can test your alternator, and replace it if its fails.

Broken Wiring

Your Porsche has hundreds of feet of electrical wiring and cables. This wiring transmits power from the alternator to each of the electrical systems. All of this wiring is protected by plastic and rubber insulation. Over time dirt or water can get into the insulation and rust or damage the wiring and its connectors. With electrical power, the slightest interference can break an electrical circuit.

Damaged wiring can cause several problems. A broken wire will cut off power to the component it’s attached to and that component will fail. A broken wire, however, will continue to receive electricity. The flow of electricity will cause the wire to heat up, and the plastic and rubber insulation around it can start to burn. Our technicians are experts at repairing wiring, and we’ll find and fix the problem.

Damaged Sensors

Sensors are attached to components throughout your engine, and they connect to your Porsche computer. Sensors provide a continual flow of information to the computer, and this information is used to make decisions. The oxygen sensor in your catalytic converter, for example, monitors the amount of oxygen flowing to the exhaust. This information is used to determine the correct fuel-air mix.

Sensors can get damaged, and this will disturb the flow of information to your computer. It can also cause your computer to make incorrect judgments due to faulty information. Our technicians can trace malfunctioning sensors and replace them.

If your Porsche exhibits any strange electrical behavior, call us ASAP at Porsche West Broward. Our Porsche-trained technicians will quickly fix the problem and have you back on the road.
