Is your Porsche engine leaking? There are many reasons and possible explanations why there’s suddenly an oily puddle on the ground under your Panamera, Macan, or Cayenne. Some leaks are minor little drips, and others could cause significant damage to your engine. Below is a list from your Porsche dealer of the eight most common causes of oil leaks.

Is Your Car Engine Leaking_8 Possible Reasons

The Oil Filter

Your car’s oil filter keeps contaminants out of the oil and away from the engine. Oil filters can be improperly aligned or loose, wear out and degrade from overuse, causing an oil leak. If the oil filter is not properly fitted or cross-threaded when installed, it will not seal correctly and eventually cause a leak.

The Oil Drain Plug

Oil filters and oil drain plugs are often the sources of engine leaks. The oil drain plug sits at the base of the oil pan. When the oil drain plug is loose, becomes misaligned, or the thread is worn, it will cause an oil leak. An oil drain plug leak is easily identified by the fresh oil around the plug.

The Oil Filler Cap

The oil filler cap for the oil tank can loosen or break, causing oil to spill while your car is running. You can tell it’s the oil filler cap when you see oil puddles under your car or around the engine.

Valve Cover Gasket

The valve cover on top of your car’s engine protects components inside the cylinder head, and the gasket provides a seal. The valve cover gasket is worn and needs replacing if your engine leaks oil from the top.

Oil Pan Gasket

The oil pan gasket is a seal between the oil pan and the engine block. Replace a gasket that is leaking oil as soon as possible.

Front and Rear Crankshaft Seals

The seals at both ends of the crankshaft prevent oil from leaking out. Even a tiny crankshaft seal leak could cause oil to pool under the engine, and a large leak will cause a puddle in front of the engine.

Timing Cover Gasket

A timing cover protects the timing chain, the oil lubricates it, and the gasket or seal keeps the oil inside the cover. When the cover itself or the gasket wears down, it will cause a leak.

Camshaft Seals

A camshaft seal fits at the end of each camshaft to prevent oil from leaking out. A worn or defective camshaft seal will start to leak and cause the smell of smoke even before it billows out of the engine.
